If you can't see any hope, zoom out
Four years pass easier when you’re engaged in doing something positive.
Here’s a reminder from The Onion that despite the apparent US election results, perspective is always available.
Concentrate on story
I rewatched Django Unchained recently, and was struck by just how entertinaing every single beat of the story is. It's quite a straight story ultimately, but you really get the sense that Tarantino relishing the thrill of every scene.
Nothing is throwaway, or used to move the story along.
He's never racing through it.
And the effect is that as an audience member, you don't want to either.
This Frank Herbert quote hits on something similar:
"The single most important piece of advice I ever got was to concentrate on story.
What is "story"? It's the quality that keeps the reader following the narrative.
A good story makes in- teresting things happen to a character with whom the reader can identify. And it keeps them happening, so that the character progresses and grows in stature.
A writer's job is to do whatever is necessary to make the reader want to read the next line. That's what you're supposed to be thinking about when you're writing a story.
Don't think about money, don't think about success; con- centrate on the story-don't waste your energy on any- thing else. That all takes care of itself, if you've done your job as a writer.
If you haven't done that, nothing helps."
Opinion reveals
The opiner doth protest too much…
"People do not seem to realize that their opinion of the world is also a confession of their character." -
